Golf's verdict: If you only know 'Rip It Up' (the single) you'll be surprised by how eclectic a mixture this album is. The title track dominates, but the unmistakable warble of Edwyn Collins keeps the album ticking along nicely. Can he sing? Is anyone sure? Do we really care?

Maire's verdict: 'Rip It Up' is a great song but unfortunately nothing else lives up to it.

Golf's verdict: I really struggle with Yes. Really, really struggle with them. On paper they should tick all the boxes, as I am certainly partial to a bit of prog rock. But despite the obvious technical excellence on display, it just leaves me cold. I think it might also be because Jon Anderson is such an almighty knob, too.

Maire's verdict: Golf described them as a bad version of early Genesis (and I hate early Genesis) so expected to be tearing my hair out by midway through the album. They don't equal the pure awfulness of Hawkwind or Incredible String Band but I'm glad I don't have to listen to them again. (Post review edit: Shit - we have 2 more albums!)

Golf's verdict: Live fast, die young and leave an attractive corpse? This is the corpse.

Maire's verdict: I remember feeling relieved when I first heard the Sex Pistols and realised that I actually liked them rather than having to pretend to like them. I still have a soft spot for this album and 'Pretty Vacant' is great but I've moved on...

Golf's verdict: If you ignore all the puerile, immature skits which make the ones on Eminem sound like Oscar Wilde, then this is a good slice of hip-hop. Nothing extraordinary, so why it should make the 1001 list ahead of so many other good slices of hip-hop is a mystery. Everyone on this record is a b****, a n***** or a Motherf****** n*****. Christmases round at Killah's Mum's must be a right old laugh.

Maire's verdict: Maybe it's because I'm recovering from a virus and am more short-tempered than usual but I just don't understand why this is on the list. It's rubbish; not offensive, despite the explicit lyrics, just boring. And the small amount of singing on 'Jellyfish' is as bad as mine when attempting 'Holding Out for a Hero' at karaoke.....

Day 50: Two punks, five leaves

Album 161/1031

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette (1979)

11."Smash It Up (Part 1)"1:59
12."Smash It Up (Part 2)"2:53

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Gun_Etiquette

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: The Damned have always been my favourite 'punk' band, ever since I heard New Rose on a compilation tape at the age of 14. A lot of this is down to the fact that the music covers a huge range of different influences and genres, even if the attitude and look remains overtly snotty. Like The Stranglers, they demonstrate a keen ear for a pop hook and tune. This is their best album and Smash It Up Pt 1 & 2, despite its adolescent title, is one of the best songs Arthur Lee and Love never wrote.

Maire's verdict: I think Golf may have been a bit sneaky as The Damned are coming to Auckland in a few weeks. He wants to go but I wasn't particularly enthusiastic and then on the day I left him to pick the albums they appear in the list..... Anyway, I really enjoyed the album and have to admit that I do know more of their songs then I thought. Guess I'm going to a gig.

10."Wonderful World"Wobble, Adams4:00

Golf's verdict: Jah Wobble is another grand old man of the punk movement, having been a member of PIL with John Lydon. But he's been more well known for exploring World Music for the last 30 years, whatever THAT is. This album is pleasant and has a number of highlights, especially when a guest vocalist - like Sinead O'Connor - takes over from Mr Wobble. He has a singing voice better suited to the shower than the recording studio.

Maire's verdict: To be honest, I always put off listening to this band because of their name. Sounds like Sinead O'Connor on the first track which is always a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Didn't deliver on its early promise and not a newly discovered gem for me but a pleasant way to spend a flight to NZ's capital nevertheless.

Golf's verdict: A really talented guitarist and songwriter who has probably sold 100 times more records since his early death than in his short career. Without belittling it, this is great mood music and great to chill out to.

Maire's verdict: Perfectly pleasant (and that's not damning with faint praise) but didn't get me particularly excited.

Golf's verdict: An incredibly strong debut album from a band who provided the whole package of music, visuals and cool. Not a weak tune on the whole album. If you've not heard their super-group collaboration with Sparks, called FFS, then go find it. It - like this - is a future classic.

Maire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: I haven't listened to this album in years and had forgotten how many cracking songs are on it. Made me smile the whole way through.

Album 160/1031

11."Nothing Much to Lose" 3:16
12."I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)" 3:10

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isn't_Anything

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: In 1988, when I was in the 5th Form at school, I swapped my original cassette copy of The Wonderstuff's Eight Legged Groove Machine for one of this with a boy called Richard Buckley. I have never had cause to regret that trade. MBV created an entirely new type of music with this album and - whilst they have hardly been prodigious since - their influence can be heard in 1000s of bands that have come since. I wonder what Richard Buckley thinks of the Eight Legged Groove Machine...

Maire's verdict: Haven't been feeling too great today and that may have affected my response. I thought this was okay but nothing to rave about. Golf declared it one of the best albums ever so may need to revisit.

Day 48: We get to play some of last week's vinyl buys

Album 155/1031

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Born in the USA (1984)

All tracks written by Bruce Springsteen.
Side one
No.TitleLength
1."Born in the U.S.A."4:40
2."Cover Me"3:27
3."Darlington County"4:48
4."Working on the Highway"3:13
5."Downbound Train"3:35
6."I'm on Fire"2:40
Side two
No.TitleLength
7."No Surrender"4:00
8."Bobby Jean"3:48

11."Dancing in the Dark"4:04
12."My Hometown"4:34
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_in_the_U.S.A.

Golf's verdict: The album that made him huge is, ironically, weak when compared to those that immediately came before and after. But they did not have the anthem 'Born in the USA' - a song so chronically misinterpreted that 'Make America Great Again' cap-wearing mouth-breathers are probably still playing it in their pick-up trucks to this day.

Maire's verdict: This was my first introduction to Bruce and therefore will always be a favourite even though it's certainly not one of his best albums. Second side is better than the first.

Album 156/1031

David Bowie - Station to Station (1976)
All songs written by David Bowie, except where noted.
Side one
No.TitleLength
1."Station to Station"10:11
2."Golden Years"4:00
3."Word on a Wing"5:59
Side two

4."TVC 15"5:31
5."Stay"6:13
6."Wild Is the Wind(Ned WashingtonDimitri Tiomkin)6:00

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Station_to_Station

Golf's verdict:
From back when it was perfectly respectable for an album to feature just 6 tracks and less than 40 minutes of music. Sometimes less is more. Worth buying for the title track alone, 'TVC15' and 'Wild Is the Wind' are my other 2 favs. 'Golden Years' has never been one of my go-to Bowie tracks but it shows the range of what he was producing in this era very well.

Maire's verdict: Not my favourite Bowie but pleasant enough to listen to on a Saturday afternoon.

Album 157/1031

The Who - Who's next (1971)

All tracks written by Pete Townshend, except "My Wife" by John Entwistle.
Side one

1."Baba O'Riley"Roger Daltrey (verses), Townshend (bridge)5:08
2."Bargain"Daltrey (verses), Townshend (bridge)5:34
3."Love Ain't for Keeping"Daltrey2:10
4."My Wife"Entwistle3:41
5."The Song Is Over"Townshend (verses), Daltrey (chorus)6:14
Side two
No.TitleLead vocalLength
6."Getting in Tune"Daltrey4:50
7."Going Mobile"Townshend3:42
8."Behind Blue Eyes"Daltrey3:42
9."Won't Get Fooled Again"Daltrey8:32

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who's_Next

Golf's verdict:
If you had to explain rock music to a visiting alien then all you need to do is play them the opening to Baba O'Riley. The bit when Keith Moon comes in is one of the GREATEST pieces of recorded music ever. They repeat the trick with 'Won't Get Fooled Again' just in case you missed it the first time, this time at around the 7.5 minute mark. The Who never managed an entirely great album, but this is the closest they got to it, with 'Behind Blue Eyes' being the other stand-out track.

Maire's verdict: I'm not and never have been a Who fan. I was dragged to see them at The Forum in London and seem to remember spending most of the gig sitting at the back reading a book while Golf enjoyed the noise. I must have soften as this wasn't as offensive as I was expecting - must be because of all the CSI episodes I've seen. Wouldn't put it on if I was by myself, though....

Album 158/1031

The Auteurs - New Wave (1993)

All songs written by Luke Haines.

  1. "Show Girl" - 4:06
  2. "Bailed Out" - 3:44
  3. "American Guitars" - 3:31
  4. "Junk Shop Clothes" - 2:42
  5. "Don't Trust the Stars" - 2:25
  6. "Starstruck" - 2:59
  7. "How Could I Be Wrong" - 3:53
  8. "Housebreaker" - 2:57
  9. "Valet Parking" - 2:55
  10. "Idiot Brother" - 5:45
  11. "Early Years" - 2:40
  12. "Home Again" - 3:24 / "Subculture (They Can't Find Him)" - 2:13 (hidden track; it follows 20 seconds of silence after the end of "Home Again")

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Wave_(The_Auteurs_album)

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: One of music's genuine, largely ignored, geniuses, Luke Haines is a prolific song-writer and performer under many guises. The Auteurs were his first successful band, but he's also worth discovering though Black Box Recorder, Baader Meinhof and as a solo artist. This was the debut album that should have made The Auteurs the equal of Blur, but life is not fair and they ended up a footnote, rather than a headline. I still buy everything Luke Haines releases.

Maire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: Golf introduced me to Luke Haines many years ago and I was a fan pretty much immediately. This is a gorgeous album, with 'Show Girl' a particular favourite. Hunt out some Black Box Recorder as well if you can - you won't regret listening to anything he records. If only he'd tour NZ.

Day 47: Otis, Janis, Bob & Lucinda

Album 151/1031

Otis Redding - Otis Blue...Sings Soul (1965)

Side one
No.TitleWriter(s)Length
1."Ole Man Trouble"Otis Redding2:55
2."Respect"Redding2:05
3."Change Gonna Come"Sam Cooke4:17
4."Down in the Valley"Bert BernsSolomon Burke, Babe Chivian, Joe Martin3:02
5."I've Been Loving You Too Long"Redding, Jerry Butler3:10
Side two

6."Shake"Cooke2:35
7."My Girl"Smokey RobinsonRonald White2:52
8."Wonderful World"Cooke, Lou AdlerHerb Alpert3:00

10."Satisfaction"Mick JaggerKeith Richards2:45
11."You Don't Miss Your Water"William Bell2:53
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis_Blue/Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul

Golf's verdict: What a voice he had! A mix of his own plus some great covers, especially of 'Change Gonna Come' and 'Down in the Valley'. Ironically, his Respect has been deservedly overshadowed by the Aretha cover, but here gives an interesting and different perspective from the male perspective.

Maire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM!: Chock full of tunes that I recognise, most often for being sung by other artistes. While I may prefer Aretha’s version of ‘Respect’, this is still just over 30 minutes of bliss.

Album 152/1031

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde (1966)

All songs written by Bob Dylan.
Side one
No.TitleLength
1."Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"4:36
2."Pledging My Time"3:50
3."Visions of Johanna"7:33
4."One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)"4:54
Side two
No.TitleLength
1."I Want You"3:07
2."Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again"7:05
3."Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat"3:58
4."Just Like a Woman"4:52
Side three
No.TitleLength
1."Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine"3:30
2."Temporary Like Achilles"5:02
3."Absolutely Sweet Marie"4:57
4."4th Time Around"4:35
5."Obviously 5 Believers"3:35
Side four
No.TitleLength
1."Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands"11:23
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blonde_on_Blonde

Golf's verdict: I think this is my favourite Bob Dylan album. It's hard to be sure given his huge output, but 'Visions of Johanna', 'I Want You', '...Mobile...', 'Just Like A Woman' & 'Sad Eyed Lady...' is almost a Side 1 of his Best of for me.

Maire's verdict: Bob Dylan is one of those artists I don’t really get (once again, probably says more about me than him). Lyrics can be brilliant (although I’m not that enamoured by ‘Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35’ which is often hailed as a classic) but I’m not a fan of his voice. This didn’t make me change my mind.

Album 153/1031

Janis Joplin - Pearl (1971)

Side one
No.TitleWriter(s)Length
1."Move Over"Janis Joplin3:39
2."Cry Baby"Jerry RagovoyBert Berns3:56
3."A Woman Left Lonely"Dan PennSpooner Oldham3:27
4."Half Moon"John Hall, Johanna Hall3:51
5."Buried Alive in the Blues"Nick Gravenites2:24
Side two

1."My Baby"Jerry Ragovoy, Mort Shuman3:44
2."Me and Bobby McGee"Kris KristoffersonFred Foster4:29
3."Mercedes Benz"Janis Joplin, Bob NeuwirthMichael McClure1:46
4."Trust Me"Bobby Womack3:15
5."Get It While You Can"Jerry Ragovoy, Mort Shuman (Howard Tate 1966 rendition)3:23
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_(album)

Golf's verdict: Whilst Bob Dylan's voice will never be described as the best arrow in his quiver, you cannot say the same for Janis. Any album with 'Me and Bobby McGee' will get my attention and the other tracks here and the way the album is put together make for a great listen, with 'Mercedes Benz' providing a great opportunity for a sing-along. A tragic waste of talent.

Maire's verdict: Gorgeous voice and some classic songs but not all killer.

Album 154/1031

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (1998)

All tracks by Lucinda Williams except where noted.
  1. "Right in Time" – 4:35
  2. "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" – 4:44
  3. "2 Kool 2 Be 4-gotten" – 4:42
  4. "Drunken Angel" – 3:20
  5. "Concrete and Barbed Wire" – 3:08
  6. "Lake Charles" – 5:27
  7. "Can’t Let Go" (Randy Weeks) – 3:28
  8. "I Lost It" – 3:31
  9. "Metal Firecracker" – 3:30
  10. "Greenville" – 3:23
  11. "Still I Long For Your Kiss" (Williams, Duane Jarvis) – 4:09
  12. "Joy" – 4:01
  13. "Jackson" – 3:42

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_Wheels_on_a_Gravel_Road

Golf's verdict:
This could have been Sheryl, Shania, Sheree, Shirelle or lord knows how many other modern country types. I know the name but not the singer and, although the album cover provides no clue, my guess is that 90% of the pictures of Lucinda feature denim and cowboy hats/boots...Not really my cup of tea. (Later edit: Yep, checked Google and denim, boots and cowboy hats are all present and correct).

Maire's verdict: Liked some of the lyrics but the music was a bit twee for me.
