Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! This was the best they got, I think. After this album came greater things and filling stadiums and featuring on famous 80s movie soundtracks, but this was the watershed between their earlier, derivative of every new-wave band going era and their eventual period as genuine contenders for U2-sized world domination. They are playing Auckland on Tuesday and if the setlist was mainly this I would be there like a shot. Sadly, Promised You a Miracle is likely to be the only one to feature.

Maire's verdict: Not my favorite album of theirs but I did know all the songs and made me remember why I loved them so much in my early / mid teens.

Golf's verdict: I put this on with some trepidation as I knew it was Katherine Hanna's band that she was primarily known for her Riot Grrrll tendancies. Whilst I cannot fault the aims of that movement, the music often took second place to the posturing and slogans. But happily not in this case. If X-Ray Spex and The Slits had not existed then this would sound remarkably fresh and exciting. Because they DO exist, it ends up sounding a little derivative, but in a good way. 'What's Yr Take on Cassavetes' is a great title too and took me back to some very poncy conversations I had when studying film.

Maire's verdict: Fun album but a bit too light for me. A couple of songs made me think of Transvision Vamp which was definitely a blast from the past.

Golf's verdict: The trouble with inventing a genre, which Husker Du more or less did for the melodic hardcore sound that ultimately led to Nirvana, is that your work can sometimes end up sounding inferior to those who take it and improve it later. In the case of Husker Du, leader Bob Mould even managed to do this himself with the first Sugar record, Copper Blue. Overall, not as good as Zen Arcade and probably could have been a single album.

Maire's verdict: Pleasant enough indie rock - nothing more, nothing less. Didn't grab me enough to want to buy it.
