Day 243: Just a castaway, an island lost at sea...

Máire: Today was a rubbish day for music.

Album 842/1031

Golf's verdict: If you love jazz then I can see how this would be a touchstone. If you hate jazz, as my wife does, then nothing is likely to make you appreciate it. If you like a bit of jazz when in the right mood then this is should be one of maybe 3 or 4 jazz records you will ever need.

Máire's verdict: (LAST ONE) Refer to previous Miles Davis reviews ....

Golf's verdict: A very challenging record and almost impossible to appreciate on a single listen. I have dipped into Pere Ubu many times over the past 20 odd years and so was suitably braced for what can appear to be an impenetrable wall of noise and wailing. Let's just say it's a grower...

Máire's verdict: Rubbish.

Golf's verdict: At best The Police were really a singles band and I think I am correct in stating that all their singles were Sting compositions. The cod-reggae of 'Message in a Bottle' and 'Walking on the Moon' wears thin nearly 40 years on. The rest is pretty forgettable.

Máire's verdict: ‘Message in a Bottle’ is okay; the rest is shite.

Golf's verdict: Whilst she sold so many records as to never have to brave a '80s Revival Tour with Limahl and Howard Jones etc., my recollection of Sade is almost entirely of the first 2 tracks from this album, sung by someone with a lovely voice and an almost unreal beauty. But I always found the music a little uninspiring.

Máire's verdict: I recognised more of these than I expected. Lovely voice but songs not to my taste.
