Golf's verdict: Ho-hum. I guess that's the point of ambient music, but it all sounds a little bit...background, at least to me.
Maire's verdict: Pleasant enough but definitely background music for me.

Golf's verdict: Ninth album from the Gibb boys and disco is still some years off. I seem to remember not taking to the last of their's we had to do (Odessa), but this one was perfectly pleasant, though at this stage none of them had - in any real sense - gotten jiggy with it.
Maire's verdict: Okay, but I prefer the disco Bee Gees.

Golf's verdict: Even the ones with Alison Goldfrapp on failed to make my ears prick up to be frank. Was never a follower, although I have danced in fields to these fellas on occasion, when suitably refreshed.
Maire's verdict: Not really my type of music. Would probably appreciate it better in a club. Okay to listen to in the background whilst tidying up my work in-box.

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Another extreme example of Maire and I's tastes sometimes not aligning. Sparks are in my all time top five bands, but she generally wants nothing to do with them (although 'This Town...' is a rare exception to that rule.) This album is dominated, yet not overwhelmed, by their biggest hit. Those of you with only a vague notion of Ron Mael on Top of the Pops with a Hitler mustache are highly recommended to seek out both this and their extensive back catalogue. Their (I think) 23rd album is out in September.
Maire's verdict: Can't believe I'm saying this but I rather enjoyed the album. Off to check my temperature.....

Don McLean - American Pie (1971)
All songs written by Don McLean except where noted.[18]
No. | Title | Length |
---|---|---|
1. | "American Pie" | 8:33 |
2. | "Till Tomorrow" | 2:11 |
3. | "Vincent" | 3:55 |
4. | "Crossroads" | 3:34 |
5. | "Winterwood" | 3:09 |
6. | "Empty Chairs" | 3:24 |
7. | "Everybody Loves Me, Baby" | 3:37 |
8. | "Sister Fatima" | 2:31 |
9. | "The Grave" | 3:08 |
10. | "Babylon" (Trad., arr. Hays and McLean) | 1:40 |
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pie_(album)
Golf's verdict: Featuring the full monty of American Pie (when you're next doing it at Karaoke why not throw in this little gem 'Oh and as I watched him on the stage, My hands were clenched in fists of rage. No angel born in Hell could break that Satan's spell') as well as 'Vincent' (aka 'Starry Starry Night'). Both very lovely and by far the two most memorable tunes on the album.
Maire's verdict: I'm pretty sure everyone I know has sung along to 'American Pie' at some point. That's the highlight but the rest keeps you entertained.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everybody_Knows_This_Is_Nowhere
Golf's verdict: Nearly a Hidden Gem simply for 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Cowgirl in the Sand', but the other 5 tunes on this second solo effort don't quite warrant it. Still plenty of gems to come from Neil though...
Maire's verdict: The man is a genius. Not my favourite album by him but still a great one.
Album 520/1031
