Day 56: Two months down and we're ahead of schedule...

Maire here. I'm not feeling too great at the moment due to a viral infection which may be why I've been reasonably underwhelmed by most of the albums from the last few days - just too grumpy and sorry for myself when I actually get round to listening. May have to re-evaluate when I'm feeling better.

Golf's verdict: Another band where the name's familiar, but I did not quite know what to expect. I liked it. Nothing to make me think I'd missed out first time around, but this is good indie-rock in the mould of L7 or Hole rather than Throwing Muses or The Breeders.

Maire's verdict: Couldn't get into this. Didn't keep my attention.

Golf's verdict: The Yardbirds did not feature in my childhood. My parents were more Elvis, Beatles & Stones than Yardbirds, Cream and Hendrix. Only really started listening to them in the past few years, working backwards from the late '60s of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the previously mentioned Cream and Jeff Beck. This is a very fine slice of Anglicised blues, with the odd touch of Eastern mysticism thrown in. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Maire's verdict: Pops used to have a double tape which I loved. Doesn't sound as good as I remember.

Golf's verdict: I could have sworn she was one the largely interchangeable American singer-songwriters with guitars currently ploughing the solo artist furrow. But this is from the late '60s and I immediately recognised the voice - a little like Judy Collins crossed with Joni Mitchell. This is not really my cup of tea however, but she undoubtedly inspired many who have followed in her footsteps.

Maire's verdict: Nice voice. Too jazzy.

Golf's verdict: I have not listened to a Madonna album all the way through in many a year. Ray of Light, nearly 20 years old, was likely the last time. If nothing else this album achieved two beneficial things: it introduce electronica and William Orbit to the masses; and it provided David Curtiss, one of the original writers of the Ray of Light melody and lyrics back in the early '70s a comfortably well off retirement. It's overall a very strong effort with Frozen and To Have and Not to Hold the other stand-outs.

Maire's verdict: I think this is the last album I bought by the Queen of Pop. I haven't listened to it for a good 10 years at least but it's still a decent album with 'Frozen' being the stand-out track for me. Not a patch on True Blue, though.
