Day 79: The King of Pop tries to top Thriller. At least 2 solid gold platters, but MJ's not one of them...

Golf's verdict: Not Thriller, not even close to Thriller. In fact, not as good as Off the Wall. Does have some good stuff on it though: 'The Way You Make Me Feel' and 'Another Part of Me', as well as the well known singles.

Maire's verdict: I thought I knew this album quite well (my sister had it for Christmas one year) but appears I only know the hits. 'Dirty Diana' and 'Smooth Criminal' are good songs but too much filler for it to be a great album.

Golf's verdict: Proper Grand 'Ole Opry style C&W. Pretty much all the songs are about loving the wrong man or loving the right man but not being loved in return. Classic stuff.

Maire's verdict: Passed in a flash. 'There Goes My Everything' is probably the best (and best known) track. The rest of the songs kind of drift into one.

The Psychedelic Furs - Talk Talk Talk (1981)

Side one
  1. "Dumb Waiters" – 5:09
  2. "Pretty in Pink" – 3:59
  3. "I Wanna Sleep with You" – 3:17
  4. "No Tears" – 3:14
  5. "Mr. Jones" – 4:03
Side two
  1. "Into You Like a Train" – 4:35
  2. "It Goes On" – 3:52
  3. "So Run Down" – 2:51
  4. "All of This and Nothing" – 6:25
  5. "She Is Mine" – 3:51

Golf's verdict: I only really know PF for 'Pretty in Pink' and the superior 'Sister Europe', but this is close to being a hidden gem. The singer has an idiosyncratic delivery that would get a little limiting after a while but has just enough range to make this a great listen.

Maire's verdict: Although I love 'Pretty in Pink' I didn't know the album. Pity as it's a great listen.

9."Mary Jane"4:41
10."Ironic"3:50

13."You Oughta Know" (Jimmy the Saint Blend) / "Your House (a cappella)" (Hidden track)8:13

Golf's verdict: With the perspective a couple of decades bring, it is clear that Alanis had a few 'issues' to work out on this record. In fact, several of the lyrics stray into 'bunny boiler' territory, but they are all the better for it. 'You Oughta Know' still has one of the best car singalong choruses we know.

Maire's verdict: This was a part of the soundtrack to my year back as a reporter in Derry. 'You Oughta Know' is the stand out track. All a bit screechy to my ears now but I still know 80% of the words.

Golf's verdict: Only 'Change Your Mind' is weak on an album that could otherwise have all been singles. They started with their best record and have gotten progressively less interesting as they've gone on.

Maire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Contender for best debut of all time. I've danced to most if not all of the tracks at some point, whether in a nightclub or a living room. Reminds me of working at FirstCo when I used to be first in the office and turned it up loud.
