Golf's verdict: When this first started I thought it was going to be a bit of an ordeal. He is a real acquired taste, after all, and one which I was not sure I had yet signed up for. But once you settle into the grunts and moans and 'sturm und drang' rhythm and percussion it turns into a really satisfying listen. Another addition to the wishlist.

Maire's verdict: I love his debut album and must admit to being slightly concerned when this one started. Shouldn't have been - one for the shopping list.

Golf's verdict: I was so into this in 1987, listening to absolutely everything they produced and reading every book and article about them. Then they followed it up with Rattle and Hum and I had already started to adjust my tastes more towards less mainstream fare. Failing a few cracking singles, that was that for me and U2, but upon listening to this for the first time in about 25 years it's immediately clear what made me so obsessive about this when I was 14. It's a great album, full of great songs, including One Tree Hill - which we now, literally, live in the shadow of.

Maire's verdict: I know every single word to this album. I may not particularly like their recent stuff but this still stands up (but get past the first 2 tracks for the best songs).
