Day 2: "I like Lou Reed", she said, sticking her tongue in my ear...*

Inevitably, once we are back at work we will not be posting every day, but hopefully we WILL still be listening. A quick hop across the Tasman Sea (well a couple of thousand kms) from Sydney back to Auckland afforded us the opportunity to hear one of Mozza's finest 'lost' period albums for the first time. Maire also found out where Prince learned to play the funky geetar and a great 'coming out' (or was he?) record from Lou Reed.

*Bonus point if you got the Pixies reference.

Album 4/1001

Morrissey - Vauxhall & I (1994)

No. Title                                                                      Music                        Length
1. "Now My Heart Is Full"                                         Boz Boorer                 4:57
2. "Spring-Heeled Jim"                                              Boorer                         3:47
3. "Billy Budd"                                                          Alain Whyte                2:08
4. "Hold on to Your Friends"                                     Whyte                          4:02
5. "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get"        Boorer                         3:44
6. "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself"                Whyte                         3:20
7. "I Am Hated for Loving"                                       Whyte                          3:41
8. "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning"                   Boorer                          3:42
9. "Used to Be a Sweet Boy"                                    Whyte                           2:49
10. "The Lazy Sunbathers"                                       Whyte                           3:08
11. "Speedway"                                                         Boorer                          4:30

Golf's verdict: Somehow I missed this when it first came out, too busy at the time with Pulp, Suede and Oasis, probably. It has some cracking tunes, almost the equal of Johnny Marr, and Mozza's lyrical quill is especially sharp on Hold onto Your Friends and Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning.

Maire's verdict: Definitely worth a second listen although not his best.

Golf's verdict: Iconic cover. Perfect Day one of my favourite songs of all time. A true concept album, unbelievably honest for the times, detailing Lou's comings and goings with Warhol Factory crowd and (perhaps) his sexual awakening.

Maire's verdict: Really enjoyed it. On the 'to buy' list.

Golf's verdict: What an opener! Prince definitely learned this one in his bedroom in the early '70s. Shame the rest of it cannot keep up, but there are some other standout tracks: Super Stupid, chief amongst them.

Maire's verdict: Maggot Brain promised everything - the rest of the album failed to deliver.
