Golf's verdict: Early signs of the great band they would become, but this is a relatively low-key debut. Enough evidence of their jangley-Rickenbacker sound on Radio Free Europe to prick the ears though.

Maire's verdict: I’ll let you into a little secret: I think REM are overrated. Based on this album I’m right.

Golf's verdict: The singing half of Gnarls Barkley was and is a fine rapper, having been previously in Goodie Mob (a less successful Atlanta, Georgia peer of Outkast). This is his commercially disappointing solo album debut, but it's a gem. Glad he's finally found the success this material always promised.

Maire's verdict: Not at all what I was expecting. Really enjoyed it.
