Golf's verdict: This was on virtually all the time when I was doing my homework as a 15 year old, so consequently I still remember every note, screeching guitar meltdown and drawl. They got better, but never really messed with the formula, which has stood up well for nearly 30 years. Freak Scene is the obvious highlight.

Maire's verdict: This won’t go down too well with Golf but I was a bit bored – nothing really stood out for me after Freak Scene (the first track) until ‘Don’t’ and that didn’t appeal. Maybe my opinion will change when I see them live tonight.

Note from next day: My opinion didn't change for the better; in fact it got worse.

Golf's verdict: Found this pretty tedious to be honest. Musak rather than music. Ideal for mid-morning TV programmes about decorating or mid-70s soft-core porn movie soundtracks.

Maire's verdict: Another pleasant enough album but not that bothered if I don’t hear it again. Doesn’t deserve being row 666 on the 1,001 album spreadsheet – I’d have reserved that for Velvet Underground.
