Golf's verdict: Less than 30 mins long, but packed full of great tunes. The second side in particular is a prelude to the following year's Pet Sounds.

Maire's verdict: Didn't really know this album but spent half of my flight to Wellington with a big smile on my face and my feet tapping away (luckily no-one was sitting next to me as I may well has been humming along at one point).

Golf's verdict: Their sound was so fresh and different when this first came out. Whilst they've pretty much stuck to the same formula ever since, this is a cracking debut, never bettered.

Maire's verdict: I still like this album but not as much as when I first heard it.

Golf's verdict: He's a real acquired taste and one I've tried and failed to acquire a number of times over the years. The 'honky tonk' country rock sound was his innovation and some of the harmonies with Emmylou Harris are sublime, but only 'Love Hurts' would make it onto my regular playlist.

Maire's verdict: Boring.

Golf's verdict: Almost the last thing she did and by this stage her voice was badly damaged from years of drug abuse. But that matters little when the song choice and the way she sings them is so well judged. A pretty emotional listen.

Maire's verdict: An album to listen to and cry. Gorgeous.

Golf's verdict: Another absolute cracker of a production from the great Rick Rubin, from back when he was better known for running Def Jam and producing New York Hip Hop. Only the pedestrian cover of Born to be Wild is a dud and Love Removal Machine is still one of the best hard rock tracks ever recorded.

Maire's verdict: A great album from a favoured band.
