Golf's verdict: A slight disappointment, as I'd remembered this as being much more consistently great than it appeared to be when rediscovering it after a very long hiatus. Still, at least half of it ('A Good Idea', 'Changes', 'Hoover Dam', 'If I Can't Change Your Mind', 'Man of the Moon') is very fine indeed and this was a welcome return to form for the half of Husker Du that wrote the catchier tunes. Bob Mould probably makes more money from his them to 'The Daily Show' that he does from this album (or all his albums) though.

Maire's verdict: This was on heavy rotation when we were at uni. Listening to it for the first time in about 20 years I really can't remember why I liked it so much. 'If I Can't Change Your Mind' is still a great track but everything else is a bit too same-y.

Golf's verdict: I was not in on the joke when he first appeared, but I am now. This is hilarious, especially the short recordings of voicemails from a worried lawyer (about the extreme content) and an outraged housewife. Not sure matricide and spousal homocide involving your toddler as an accessory are appropriate topics for light entertainment, mind. Ironically, he has explored the dangers of becoming a role model to the maladjusted and of being taken too literally in some of his later stuff. This debut though, nearly 20 years old, sounds fresh as a daisy.

Maire's verdict: I didn't really get Eminem when he first wandered onto the music scene. May have taken me a while but I do like this album.

Golf's verdict: Another artist who takes a little time and effort to appreciate, but rewards the effort in spades. If this sounds a little too avant-garde, then acquaint yourself to his voice via one of his great covers (of Neil Diamond's 'I'm a Believer' or Elvis Costello's 'Shipbuilding') before coming back to this.

Maire's verdict: Hmm. I can't decide whether I would start loving or start hating this album if I listened to it a few more times. There were some flashes of genius but other parts almost sent me running from the room.

Golf's verdict: What a talented bugger he was. His style of music was never really my cup of tea, but he could sure write a hit record. The fact that he stopped writing so many of them in his later years may have been to do with his substance abuse problems (or being so rich that he famously gave huge sums of money away anonymously), or perhaps having less hits was one way of relieving some of the pressure of being one of the world's most famous people for much of his adult life. 'One More Try' is the highlight for me, as well as the title track.

Maire's verdict: The first three tracks on this album are classics and I remembered all the words despite not listening to it since my early 20s. The rest of the album is a bit of a let down.
