Golf's verdict: I think I am beginning to get the hang of this Jazz malarkey. Most of it does sound the 8 bars of improvised 'break down' you sometimes get in the middle of certain psychedlic and rock records of note, the difference being that they rarely resolve themselves back into a traditional repetitive structure. Give it another few years and I could really be causing Maire grief by listening to this sort of stuff when peeling potatoes.

Maire's verdict: IT'S OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF LONG!!! That's half an hour longer than my bloody flight to Wellington. I really, REALLY don't get the appeal and it makes my ears hurt. I don't want to do this anymore 😔.

Album 315/1031

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973)

  1. "Tubular Bells {Part One}" – 25:58
  2. "Tubular Bells {Part Two}" – 23:20
  3. "Mike Oldfield's Single" – 3:53
  4. "Sailor's Hornpipe" (Vivian Stanshall version) – 2:48

Golf's verdict: Most famous for putting the smug grin on to Richard Branson's face that has remained for 45 years. It is a very pleasant instrumental on which the 19 year old prodigy plays most of the instruments. I actually most enjoyed the bonus track 'Sailor's Hornpipe' on which an obviously extremely refreshed Vivian Stanshall improvises some delightful nonsense.

Maire's verdict: Not my usual fare but it does have The Exorcist music! Didn't hold my attention for the whole album though.

Album 316/1031

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain (2000)

4."Pilots"4:29
5."Deer Stop"4:06

7."Oompa Radar"4:42
8."Utopia"4:18
9."Horse Tears"5:10

Golf's verdict: Along with Portishead's Dummy, this album really did seem to herald an entirely new, vividly cinematic musical genre. I think Goldfrapp got better and better over the course of their next two albums ('Black Cherry' and 'Supernature'), but this has much to recommend it, especially 'Lovely Head' and 'Utopia'.

Maire's verdict: I prefer later albums but quite liked this one. She has such a gorgeous voice. A far more enjoyable soundtrack to my flight than the one this morning.

  1. You won't be causing me grief, darling, as we'll be divorced.
