Day 249: If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?

Album 866/1031

Happy Mondays - Bummed (1988)

All tracks written by Happy Mondays except 10 (Happy Mondays, Lennon–McCartney)
  1. "Country Song" – 3:24
  2. "Moving in With" – 3:36
  3. "Mad Cyril" – 4:36 (Opens with the line "We've Been Courteous" from Performance supposedly sounding like Ian Curtis)
  4. "Fat Lady Wrestlers" – 3:25
  5. "Performance" – 4:09
  6. "Brain Dead" – 3:10 (Ryder's opening "You're rendering that scaffolding dangerous!" is a quote from the film Gimme Shelter, in which it is uttered by Sam Cutler, referring to the set at the Altamont Free Concert)
  7. "Wrote for Luck" – 6:05
  8. "Bring a Friend" – 3:45
  9. "Do It Better" – 2:29
  10. "Lazyitis" – 2:48 (The song explicitly borrows from "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles, but also nods to "Family Affair" and "Gonna Make You a Star" by David Essex)

Golf's verdict: The broad appeal and enduring popularity of the Mondays has always been one of life's most unexplainable phenomena to me. Whilst I don't hate this, it just about manages to avoid being mediocre on account of 'Wrote for Luck'. I think they are probably one of the luckiest bands in the history of UK music.

Máire's verdict: Christ, I can’t stand this band.

Golf's verdict: Released to satisfy a '2 albums in 1967' clause in the band's contract, this is patchy as a result. Only 'Little Wing' regularly makes it onto his compilation 'Best of...' albums, which reveals a lot.

Máire's verdict: Bizarre start. Pleasant but nothing more.

Golf's verdict: Have gone through life never crossing paths with James Taylor and his music, though familiar with his name. I do not feel in any way short-changed as a result.

Máire's verdict: For some reason (I think it was ‘Sunny Skies’) I started thinking of Sesame Street and couldn’t get rid of it. It put me off.

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Great Southern rock music, topped off with one of the greatest guitar tracks ever put to tape, 'Freebird'.

Máire's verdict: A fun listen. ‘Free Bird’ is a classic song.
