Day 276: Where do bad folks go when they die?/They don't go to heaven where the angels fly/They go down to the lake of fire and fry/Won't see 'em again till the fourth of July

These 10 albums got listened to on 25th October, 17th November and 30th November but a breakdown in critical communications (Maire forgetting to email her reviews to Golf, or Golf accidentally deleting Maire's emails before posting the blog) they were not posted at the time. Luckily we have been doing a proper audit of all reviews and blogs in the final stretch of this year's challenge and so we've managed to rescue them from cyberspace.

Album 987/1031

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (1982)

All songs by Donald Fagen, except where noted.
Side one
  1. "I.G.Y." – 6:03
  2. "Green Flower Street" – 3:42
  3. "Ruby Baby" (Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, arranged by Donald Fagen) – 5:38
  4. "Maxine" – 3:50
Side two
  1. "New Frontier" – 6:23
  2. "The Nightfly" – 5:45
  3. "The Goodbye Look" – 4:47
  4. "Walk Between Raindrops" – 2:38

Golf's verdict: Sounds extremely dated by its production and not that different to the material he was making with Walter Becker in Steely Dan. You wonder why he bothered.

Máire's verdict: Very Eighties and middle of the road.

Album 988/1031

Earth, Wind & Fire - That's The Way of the World (1975)

8."See the Light"Louise Anglin, Philip Bailey, Larry Dunn6:18

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Most people only know Philip Bailey from his hit with Phil Collins (Easy Lover - bit of a guilty pleasure), but this is a great showcase for his fantastic voice. One of the funkiest records ever.

Máire's verdict: Funky.

Album 989/1031

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace of Sin (1969)

Side one

  1. "Christine's Tune" (ParsonsHillman) - 3:04
  2. "Sin City" (Parsons, Hillman) - 4:11
  3. "Do Right Woman" (Chips MomanDan Penn) - 3:56
  4. "Dark End of the Street" (Chips Moman, Penn) - 3:58
  5. "My Uncle" (Parsons, Hillman) - 2:37

Side two

  1. "Wheels" (Hillman, Parsons) - 3:04
  2. "Juanita" (Hillman, Parsons) - 2:31
  3. "Hot Burrito #1" (Ethridge, Parsons) - 3:40
  4. "Hot Burrito #2" (Ethridge, Parsons) - 3:19
  5. "Do You Know How It Feels" (Parsons, Barry Goldberg) - 2:09
  6. "Hippie Boy" (Hillman, Parsons) - 4:55

Golf's verdict: Gram Parsons' band and this is a very pleasant album of country tunes, but there is nothing of the quality of 'Love Hurts' on here.

Máire's verdict: I was expecting full-on Latino music so this was a bit of a surprise. Perfectly pleasant.

Album 990/1031

The Gun Club - Fire of Love (1981)

All songs composed by Jeffrey Lee Pierce; except where indicated
Side A
  1. "Sex Beat" - 2:45
  2. "Preaching the Blues" (Robert Johnson; arranged by Jeffrey Lee Pierce) - 3:58
  3. "Promise Me" - 2:35
  4. "She's Like Heroin to Me" - 2:33
  5. "For the Love of Ivy" (Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Kid Congo Powers) - 5:31
  6. "Fire Spirit" - 2:52
Side B
  1. "Ghost on the Highway" - 2:43
  2. "Jack on Fire" - 4:40
  3. "Black Train" - 2:11
  4. "Cool Drink of Water" (Tommy Johnson; traditional, arranged by Jeffrey Lee Pierce) - 6:10
  5. "Goodbye Johnny" - 3:41

Golf's verdict: You may not have heard this, but this very influential band included Patricia Morrison who later joined The Sisters of Mercy and Kid Congo Powers, who was one of Nick Cave's original Bad Seeds and still makes great music. This is a cracking album of garage rock.

Máire's verdict: Never heard of them. Very enjoyable.

Album 991/1031

  4. "The Man Who Sold the World" (David Bowie) – 4:20
  5. "Pennyroyal Tea" – 3:40
  6. "Dumb" – 2:52
  7. "Polly" – 3:16
  8. "On a Plain" – 3:44

  10. "Plateau" (Curt Kirkwood) – 3:37
  11. "Oh, Me" (Kirkwood) – 3:26
  12. "Lake of Fire" (Kirkwood) – 2:56
  13. "All Apologies" – 4:23
  14. "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (Traditional; arranged by Lead Belly) – 5:08

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! A great live album, which Cobain perhaps sought to 'sabotage' by including a number of obscure cover versions (3 Meat Puppets, 1 Captain America, 1 Leadbelly - as well as the Bowie classic), but which ultimately makes it even more enduring.

Máire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! I’d forgotten just how much I enjoyed this album. Will be listening again soon.

Album 992/1031

Lambchop - Nixon (2000)

All songs written by Kurt Wagner, except where noted.
  1. "The Old Gold Shoe" – 6:21
  2. "Grumpus" – 4:19
  3. "You Masculine You" – 5:59
  4. "Up with People" – 5:59

  6. "What Else Could It Be?" – 3:38
  7. "The Distance from Her to There" – 4:20
  8. "The Book I Haven't Read" (Wagner, Curtis Mayfield) – 5:44
  9. "The Petrified Florist" – 4:52
  10. "The Butcher Boy" (traditional) – 2:54

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! I bought this at the time, though God knows what happened to it. A fantastic article of Americana.

Máire's verdict: A potential Hidden Gem. Not at all what I was expecting.

Album 993/1031

11."At War with Satan (preview)"2:14

Golf's verdict: (Unintentionally) hilarious. This may well be a huge influence on Death/Thrash Metal but those who came later certainly perfected it from this VERY rough template.

Máire's verdict: Good metal shouldn’t remind you of Spinal Tap. This made me giggle.

Album 994/1031

    • a. "59 Chrystie Street" (0:57)
    • b. "Get on the Mic" (1:14)
    • c. "Stop That Train" (1:59)
    • d. "A Year and a Day" (2:22)
    • e. "Hello Brooklyn" (1:32)
    • f. "Dropping Names" (1:03)

    • h. "Mike on the Mic" (0:48)
    • i. "A.W.O.L." (1:46)"
12:33
Total length:53:03

Golf's verdict: Long unavailable due to sample clearance issues, it was great to hear this again after so long. At the time it was considered a massive flop. As a follow up to the frat-house debut album 'Licensed to Ill' it is indeed a real change of pace and style, but it has been deservedly reassessed as an early hip-hop classic.

Máire's verdict: Drifted over me, to be honest. Not a patch on previous offerings.

Golf's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Full of lovely tunes, sung beautifully and featuring an extraordinarily good cover of the Velvet's 'Sweet Jane'.

Máire's verdict: HIDDEN GEM! Not at all what I was expecting. Loved it. Beautiful voice.

Golf's verdict: Rightly lauded for 'The Girl from Ipanema', this is a really fun listen for all of its relatively short duration. Hip-Hop album producers take note! 33:46 used to be a perfectly acceptable duration for a record.

Máire's verdict: ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ is a classic but not really my genre.
